Weltenburger Enge / Danube Gorge Nature Reserve
The Danube Gorge’s “Weltenburger Enge” (“Weltenburg Gap”) is a unique natural spectacle. This nature reserve was awarded with the European Diploma of Protected areas for the first time in 1978.
In 2008, this award was extended for another ten years. The “Weltenburger Enge” is one of the “100 most beautiful geotopes in Bavaria”, selected by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment. Approximately 200,000 years ago, a branch of the primeval Danube cut its way through the limestone, creating the modern-day riverbed of the Danube.
Das Naturschutzgebiet umfasst den Donaulauf und die Talhänge zwischen Kelheim und Weltenburg.
