In the Green Heart of Bavaria

 - The Altmühltal Nature Park lies about 100 km north of Munich, Bavaria’s capital. Its beautiful countryside and all of the variety of its natural landscape make it a hiker’s, cyclist’s and canoer’s heaven… and also an ideal place for those who want to get to know a region through its delicacies. The Altmühltal Nature Park is “home” to the famous Archaeopteryx fossils, the link in the evolutionary chain that connects reptiles to birds. Therefore, it is like an open window on the mysterious Jurassic world: here you can go back over the geologic history of Earth and search for fossils in some of the stone quarries of the region. The Altmühltal Nature Park can be easily reached both by car and by train; it is located in a central position among Nuremberg to the north, Munich to the south, the Roman-founded city of Augusta (today’s Augsburg) to the west and the magnificent Regensburg (today a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to the east.

The Altmühl Cycle Route (Altmühltal-Radweg) follows the river Altmühl 167 km long from its spring to its confluence with the Danube. It is a flat trail that runs separated from traffic and therefore it is particularly family-friendly.

Archaeopteryx and other rare fossils

The Altmühltal Nature Park is world-famous as the “homeland of the Archaeopteryx”, because the fossils of the so-called “primeval birds” have been found only here. This is a particularly rich fossiliferous region, where many other extraordinary fossils have been uncovered, too.
